A spa manager shares her secrets to getting the right nutrients that will help breakouts
There is lots of information out there on all the topical treatments and exfoliates we can use to combat acne flare-ups. But what about healing from within first? Below are the most effective vitamins you can take, either in food or supplement form, to repair past damage and help prevent future breakouts.
To help reduce inflammation a Zinc supplement and an Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) that contains the anti-inflammatory Azelic Acid is recommended. Azelic acid has antimicrobial properties and can be found in wheat, barley and rye. Zinc boosts immune function which can help the body prevent further infection. Both Zinc and Vitamin A assist in healing the skin’s tissue, which can prevent scarring. Foods that contain Vitamin A include dark leafy greens and orange produce like apricots or carrots, plus almonds (so go eat a salad today!).
Often breakouts are due to hormonal fluctuations. A supplement containing either Saw Palmetto, Black Currant Seed Oil or Evening Primrose Oil can help balance hormones.
An Omega 3 fatty acid can help maintain normal cell function and has antibacterial properties. You can find these in a supplement that contains Fish Oils or Flax seed oil. You can also buy flaxseed oil and pour some into a smoothie or your morning granola. While increasing your intake of healthy fats, it is also important to cut back on unhealthy saturated fats and partially hydrogenated fats, which can increase inflammation in the skin.
When your body is eliminating toxins it can often show up as acne. To promote healthy digestion and normal intestinal bacteria a supplement of Acidophilus is advised. It is also very important to help your body flush out toxins by staying well hydrated throughout the day. By getting adequate fluids your body is better able to transport the nutrients it needs.
Echinacea, Goldenseal and Calendula are all herbs that can be effective in the treatment of acne. Cnidium Seed and Honeysuckle flower are Chinese herbs that are that can also be effective.
Be sure to talk with your health care provider for the recommended dosage for you and your needs.
