Often when we break out we turn to medical or cosmetic products to heal our acne, but have we ever wondered what people did about their acne before all of our modern day commercial products came to drug store shelves?
Behold, the power of foods and natural ingredients to help our skin have always been and still are around us. Some you eat, and some you simply rub on. For example:
Potatoes! It’s hard to believe but if you slice a potato and rub its juice on your acne spots, it helps! Be sure to wash the potato so the dirt and bacteria on the skin don’t get on to you. Leave the juice on for a little while and then rinse, following with a mild non-comedogenic soap.
Honey. Yes, it’s sticky, but a friend of mine once told me that people often don’t think of honey, when actually, it’s pure in form, so it can draw out impurities. Apply it often to your scars so your skin can heal and new cells can appear to replace the damage.
Water. The most obvious thing we never think of. But think about it. Our bodies are mostly water, and water cleans things outside of us, why wouldn’t it clean things inside of us? Lots of water can help clear out toxins that sit in your body and get to your skin, causing the acne.
Lemon. Among all it’s other positive uses lemon can be used to lighten up your skin where acne scars are leaving their mark.
Orange produce. This is an all-encompassing one. When there’s orange colour in foods, it means it contains Vitamin A, which is good for the skin. So pumpkins, yams, carrots – eat ‘em up!
So next time you find yourself breaking out, before heading to your nearest lotions and cosmetics, turn to the refrigerator!
