Teeth whitening can seem like the long awaited answer to coffee-ridden shy smiles.  Anyone who cares about their looks, and drinks coffee and tea regularly is bound to have noticed their teeth turning a little more yellowish lately.

It can cause a panic attack whereby one runs to the dentists or spa clinic to get a professional teeth whitening job done.  Or, for the more frugal yellow smilers, the $30 one-size-fits-all teeth whitening trays at the drug store will do just fine.

Anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock in the last couple years can’t help but notice the many Internet ads, dentist suggestions and amazing deal offers for teeth whitening that have popped up all of a sudden, as if it’s the new black.

And people will always say that it causes sensitivity for a while.  But did you know teeth whitening can do much more than that?

Truly speaking, the process of whitening teeth can be gruesome to your teeth enamel.  If over done, or done improperly, the following dramatic side effects could occur:

• Your teeth can turn blue
• Your teeth will appear white only in some areas – either becoming blotchy from a job not well done at home, or because false teeth or fillings aren’t affected, thus creating a multi-coloured mouth!
• Your gums can recede
• Vomiting from accidentally swallowing hydrogen peroxide
• Bad breath from alcohol
• Teeth dehydration from glycerin
• Chemical burns

Skeptics also believe that with the chemical effects that cause teeth pores to open up, not only will sensitivity become an issue, but you will become more prone to teeth decay.  Even worse is that your teeth may stain more easily in the future.

Even whitening tooth paste ingredients can contain chemicals that actually break away at your teeth enamel, with the idea that taking off the top stained layer will reveal a whiter layer underneath.  This is not a long-term strategy, since teeth thin with age anyway, and when they do, they can crack more easily.

Teeth whitening may also just not work for some people.  If your teeth were darkened from using tetracycline for acne, your case is almost irreversible.  Same goes for teeth that have had a root canal.  Crowns, bridges and filling also cannot be whitened.

If your teeth are currently undergoing construction at the dentist’s office, beware of feeling rushed by your dentist to get your teeth whitened too soon.  You may need to let the teeth settle for a while.

For those who have sensitive teeth already, the cost of pain associated with a teeth whitening procedure may not be worth the perceived value.  Imagine how much worse it will be when you take in hot, cold, sweet or acidic foods.

Alternatives to a brighter smile include natural options such as rinsing your mouth with baking soda every once in a while.  It might taste gross, but it beats the harsh side effects of using hydrogen peroxide.  And of course, no one can deny that simply avoiding the foods that cause teeth stains in the first place is the best way to a whiter set of jewels!

We have to first realize what chemicals we are up against in deciding to make the switch. According to safecosmetics.org, there are three main ingredients to avoid that happen to be in almost all regular nail polishes: DBP, toluene, and formaldehyde. These are known reproductive and developmental toxins, carcinogens, and neurotoxins that are introduced into our systems by breathing the fumes, and by absorption through skin and nails. Despite a minority of aesthetic schools and salons now moving away from using them, it’s unfortunate that the industry standard is still the traditional chemical laden formula, a lot of times used in poorly ventilated areas to boot. A simple thing to do as a client getting a mani or pedi is just bring your own polish with you, and it doesn’t hurt to discuss trying some natural options with the salon owner.

While completely chemical free isn’t an option as of now, some like Sephora by OPI, Zoya, Orly, and the Loreal Paris Jet-Set line all avoid using the top three chemicals mentioned earlier. Some other lesser-known health store options include Honeybee Gardens, Suncoat, Sante, and Earthly Delights. Knowing what ingredients to look out for and checking the labels will help us uncover more choices as beauty brands continue to become more and more health conscious.

Many large grocery and drugstore chains have been expanding their natural products section, and even makeup giant Sephora has been more supportive of the green girl shopping for safe products. Natural and organic brands becoming more available in these stores is great for consumers who may not have had a good natural specialty store in their town to shop in before. Similarly, many mainstream brands are also starting to change their formulas little by little and attract a consumer that may not have been interested or was afraid to try a natural product before. While it seems natural nail polishes are too often relegated to a small display of few color choices, a little bit of digging uncovered some options that many of us may not be aware of.

If you want to look great, then having great skin is a necessity. Diet and exercise play an important role when it comes to taking steps to improve the health of your skin beyond simply using good skin care products. Not only will it make you feel good about yourself, but the following steps also have many ancillary benefits when it comes to your health and happiness.

Dry Brush Exfoliation: This should be done in the morning prior to going in the shower. This gets ride of excess dead skin, thus allowing your skin to detox. This will also help with blood circulation and decreases any puffiness. While this is a great way to improve your skin condition it also provides a calming affect through the gentle pressure, which stimulates the nervous system. With the help of a bristle brush you can be on your way to a dry brush exfoliation once a day in no time.

Hydration: This causes your digestion to slow down and in turn leaves your body filled with impurities for longer than it should. You should try to drink 4 litres of water per day, at least. In order to make sure you meet this target have a bottle of water with you at all times throughout the day and you will find it’s easy to get through this amount without thinking about it. Don’t like drinking plain water? Consider adding flavoring to your water.

Fibre: Fibre will improve your diet and your skin at the same time. Most people know that this will make their skin glow, but few know how to realistically eat their RDA of fibre every day. Here’s some tips to make sure you manage:

1. Brown is better than white. Pasta and bread both have up to ten times as much fibre in them when you opt for brown rather than white. This is an easy dietary change for most people, so at least give it a try and see if you can make the shift.

2. Eat apples, and lots of them! Apples are sweet and tasty. More importantly their skins are jam packed with fibre. Try to eat a couple of apples a day as a contribution towards your 5 fruit and vegetables.

Get exercise: If you fail to get exercise then you’ll notice your muscle tone turning to flab. This has been said to lead to cellulite, acne and bloating. None of which will do your complexion any favours! That’s why you have to consider incorporating an exercise plan into your lifestyle. This shouldn’t be a chore, and is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.

Sugar: Sugar may be sweet, but it doesn’t do your skin any favours. This is said to be one of the major causes of ageing in the skin. You can easily tackle this problem through ensuring your not having any more sugar in your diet than you have to. This means that a sprinkle of sugar on your cereal shouldn’t be an option. When it comes to tea and coffee, it’s easy to gradually reduce whether or not you take sugar. If you currently take 2 spoonfuls, come down to zero half a spoonful at a time.

It is true; you can stop the signs of aging with something as simple as watching how much water you are drinking on a daily basis. You see your body is designed to naturally repair and heal itself. Your body is made up of cells that are always replacing themselves and they can either produce stronger or weaker cells to take over. As you age, your body needs more help in regenerating those cells. Water is the best way to help your body with cell reproduction.

How much water is enough?

It is recommended that your drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of water everyday. However I like to make sure I drink at least that and add a few extra ounces everyday to really stay as hydrated as possible. Remaining fully hydrated at all times helps your skin to remain soft and free of those pesky wrinkles that come over time. Not only does pure water help to reduce signs of aging, it also improves your body in many other areas of health. You maybe asking right now, “how am I going to drink that much water everyday?” That is a completely understandable question that many feel like they either won’t be able to drink that much, or don’t enjoy drinking water enough for that. This is my recommendation that I found really helped me. I fill up water bottles that equal more than the amount I need to drink that day. After all, we want to help our anti aging battle anyway we can. So, we’ll fill up our water bottles, and carry them with us through out the day. Some people also find it hard to drink plain water; you can add a squeeze of fresh lemon to add a little flavor to you water. Filtered water is recommended, and you should stay away from pre-flavored waters as many of them contain juices and sugars that will not help you with anti aging! The other suggestion I have for anti aging with water is that you drink at least two cups of room temperature water as this helps in detoxification of the body as well.

Other Benefits of Water

A secret I recently learned about drinking water is that you can use it as a “comfort food”. Many people find that when they are stressed out they eat because a full stomach produces a feeling of comfort. However when eating, more times than not, we are tempted to grab foods that are loaded with sugar, high carbohydrates and white flour. Eating a lot of these foods is really hard on your body and can degenerate cell growth. Not to mention these foods are fattening and can also add on a few extra pounds which no one really wants. The best thing to do is when you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed is to drink down as much water was possible, it will help fill your stomach to give you that comfort and it will once again help you with the anti-aging process!

1. Avoid wearing too much

Makeup is meant to enhance features not bring negative attention to you. That’s what wearing too much makeup will do; it will bring you unwanted attention. Don’t wear too much of anything such as:

i) Eyeliner: dark, thick eyeliner will make you look overdone and will ruin the rest of your makeup.

ii) Mascara: too much mascara looks fake and will flake. It looks especially bad if worn with thick eyeliner or dark blue eye eye shadow.

iii) Foundation: Make sure your foundation is the same color as your skin. Foundation is meant to protect and give the face a smooth look. The magic word is blend.

iv) Powder: The same holds true for powder – not too much. Also, be sure to blend your makeup so there are no obvious lines.

2. Lips

Apply lip liner to completely cover the lips, add color and your lipstick will stay on much longer. Make sure your lip liner doesn’t show. Also, your lip color should match your skin tone; wear cool colors if you have cool coloring and warm colors if you have warm coloring. If you want to make your lips look smaller, keep your liner on the inside of your lips. However, if you decide to make your lips look larger, going outside the natural outline of you lips is a mistake. This can look quite messy and unnatural.

3. Appropriate makeup

Wear makeup that is appropriate for the occasion. If you are going to the beach you shouldn’t wear the same or as much makeup as you would if you were going dancing. Also, when you are in daylight your makeup should be a lighter than when you are out for the evening.

4. Too little or no makeup

Some women don’t wear makeup because they are not sure how to use it and are afraid of being overdone. If you are unsure, start will light colours in your shade. Start slowly and add one product at a time. Maybe start with foundation, add mascara, blush or lipstick. If you are not used to wearing makeup, using a lot a first may be a little too much for you, so start slowly. The bottom line is a little is better than none. If you are still unsure seek professional advice.

5. Overall look

When your makeup is completed it should look natural. That means avoiding colours that clash. If you have dark skin and hair you will look better in darker shades; light colours will make you look washed out. If your hair and skin tone are light, light colours will look better on you. Dark makeup will make you look older and harsh. If you have oily skin, first use oil control moisturizer and foundation. Then be sure to wear loose powder, keeping pressed powder with you for touch ups.

6. Hair color

Your hair color should also be in harmony with your skin. If you have dark hair and you want to add color, keep it close to the same shade. If you have light hair, use light colors. As you age your skin will lighten, so should your hair color. One last thing about hair color – if you do color you hair be sure you keep it up, don’t let your roots show.

7. One last thing

Keep makeup looking fresh all day by doing regular touch ups. Don’t let your makeup fade or crease. Smile!!!

When we talk about chemicals in our beauty products, none can be more obvious than nail polish remover. But for those of us that love our mani’s and pedi’s, we just can’t live without it. I mean, come on, don’t expect us to spend an evening in front of the television scratching off chipped nail paint before we can redo our chic look again!

What we don’t realize is that the main ingredient in nail polish removers is acetone, which is also called 2-propanone (sound like ‘propane’ to anyone?). It is the same stuff used in commercial paint thinners and, as the bottles often don’t deny, it’s flammable and can also be poisonous! (Note to self: never drink nail polish remover on a dare). You don’t have to spend outrageous amounts of money on surgery or other drastic procedures to learn how to get rid of cellulite. There are at home remedies that can help you dissolve the excess fat and restore your skins natural beauty. The following measures will give you and idea of how to get rid of cellulite with at home remedies.

Cellulite Body Wrap

You don’t have to go to a spa or salon to get a cellulite body wrap. Both professional and homemade cellulite body wraps can improve the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite body wraps use a mixture of minerals and herbs that stimulate the fat cells to release the fat; they absorb toxins from the skin and reduce swelling. You can utilize herbs such as kelp or algae, which stimulate the fat burning process in the cells.

Skin Care

Skin care is very important for learning how to get rid of cellulite. You should cleanse your skin using your wash cloth or loufah to massage the area where cellulite exists. Cellulite and Coffee

Many experts have recommended using caffeinated coffee grounds as a scrub for cellulite prone areas. The grounds produce an exfoliate action, as the caffeine absorbs into the skin and stimulates the fat cells to release their contents. You can apply warm coffee grounds to the targeted area and wrap with plastic wrap for 10 minutes or mix the grounds with hand cream and apply, massaging the area for at least sixty seconds. Many cellulite creams on the market also utilize caffeine and other cellulite-fighting ingredients. After you are done rinse the grounds off in the shower.

Anti Cellulite Diet
