What is tea tree oil?
Tea tree oil is most commonly used as an alternative for acne treatments compared to harsh chemical based products on drug store shelves today. It is collected from the leaves of the Australian Melaleuca Alternafolia tree and therefore is also called melaleuca oil.

The oils from the leaves are known to have strong antibacterial and anti-fungal properties and can kill the bacteria that create acne blemishes. Tea tree oil can effectively clear varying degrees of acne for those suffering from this problem. Studies have shown that there are fewer side effects from tea tree oil than products that contain benzoyl peroxide.
But did you know tea tree oil can do more than heal acne?
In fact, since it is antibacterial and anti-fungal, it is used in natural products like deodorant (since germs are what cause our arm pits to stink), tooth paste and mouth wash, and shampoo (not only to keep our scalps squeaky clean, but to help with dandruff!). There is even bar soap made with tea tree oil!
In more serious cases, tea tree oil can be used to fight fungal and bacterial infections, such as yeast infections, and nail disease. Tea tree oil also attacks buts like head lice and scabies. Keep THAT in your first aid kit!
There is a slightly slower time in seeing positive results from tea tree oil, however, once applied to areas of the skin affected by acne it is known to be equally as effective as benzoyl peroxide (remember Proactiv, anyone?).
You may also be interested in knowing that tea tree oil is a very popular ingredient in several types of cosmetics such as pressed powder and blemish concealing sticks. Some day lotions also contain tea tree oil to help control oily skin.
Where can I get tea tree oil?
Tea tree oil is common and you should be able to find it in the health and beauty section of your local store. Just make sure the tea tree oil you buy is 100% tea tree oil to get the best concentration of the stuff, BUT be very careful because it is strong! You should never try to swallow tea tree oil and if you feel your skin burning when using it, take caution and stop, or dilute it in some lotion or water first.
