Here ya go! These are make-at-home shampoos that can be used as an alternative to commercial shampoos. Whether you’re trying to save money or simply trying to go all natural, each is worth a try!
Note: Some of these can be used as ‘dry shampoos’, which are great for a waterless cleanse and excellent for those rushed mornings or times of illness.
Egg Whites
Separated from their yolks and beaten, egg whites can be rubbed into scalp and hair. Allow the whites to dry before brushing and rinsing out. Your hair will smell bad, but it can do wonders for moisturizing any dryness.
Witch Hazel
Not only does Witch hazel clean your hair, it also relieves scalp itching. Witch hazel has natural astringent properties, so it can help oily pores as well. Apply directly to the scalp and brush out.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleaching and cleaning agent from animal and plant cells that is coming to be a more popular alternative to chlorine bleach. However, even hydrogen peroxide should be used at a very diluted state, about 3%. It can be used as a toothpaste and mouthwash, in addition to a hair cleanser, but should never be swallowed. This natural cleaner is suggested only for fair-haired folk. 3% hydrogen peroxide will serve the same purpose as Witch hazel.
Talc, Oatmeal, Bran, Almondmeal, or Cornmeal with Baking Soda
Any of these with a bit of baking soda mixed in are great for cleaning, absorbing oil and controlling odor. You can choose one or the other, or try a combination of a few. Rub the ingredients of your choice in at the scalp for 12 minutes, then thoroughly brush out.
Baking Soda and then Vinegar
This is a known remedy for those with curly hair who are tired of the dryness that commercial shampoo creates. First form the baking soda into a paste and use like a shampoo, then rinse out with diluted vinegar, until the baking soda comes out. Finally, rinse with water to get rid of the vinegar smell.
Shampoo without the Suds for those of us who prefer less bubbles around:
Drinking Alcohol and Water
Undoubtedly no one wants to go to work with their hair smelling like Vodka or Rum- this one is more so for fun, and it works too!
Apple Cider Vinegar
Use this to get rid of soap residue or dandruff.
Omlette Shampoo
A whole egg, or an egg yolk beaten with water makes a great shampoo for dried out hair.
